‘Tis the season for layering up. Now that fall is in full swing, temperatures are dropping and staying warm is top priority. Since I live in Miami, I typically do not need a lot of coats except when I am traveling and I usually wear something basic and black. However, I have been seeing a number of fashion forward coats this season and am highlighting my favorites below!

Since I love all things blush and all things Joie, I could not resist this long car coat. This versatile piece can be worn over dresses for nights out or with jeans and a tee shirt for casual days. Hair Care Essentials

Hair Care Essentials

Sooo…stating the obvious, I have a lot of hair. A LOT. I like wearing it long which means I have to take care of it to make sure it stays healthy. I try a lot of different products, but today I am sharing my hair care essentials. In the past, I have strayed from these products but always return because they are effective in keeping my hair in tip top shape.

Aveda Damage Remedy Intensive Restructuring Treatment

Since I use a blow dryer, straightener, waving wand or curling iron every day, I like to use this treatment once a month to help heal my hair from heat damage. It is made with quinoa protein to strengthen damaged hair. Available at www.aveda.com.

Aquis Hair Towel

It is true that your hair has the highest chance of being damaged while it is wet than any other time. In order to minimize damage, I use the Aquis Hair Towel. Drybar Hair Clips

Like with most things, the key to making your hair look great is being organized. Whether curling or blow drying, I use these Drybar hair clips to separate into sections and then style. Available at www.sephora.com.

Oribe Soft Lacquer Heat Styling Spray

In addition to the Oribe detangler, I also use this heat styling spray to protect my hair before blow drying. What I like the most about this product is that it does not leave your hair greasy or sticky, but soft and shiny. Available at www.oribe.com.

Organic Coconut Oil

Once a month I like to do a coconut oil mask on my hair. It takes a bit to shampoo out the next day but the coconut oil is incredibly moisturizing for your hair and scalp. Since I use coconut oil for a variety of beauty purposes, I now buy it in this large size that is available at www.amazon.com.

The Wet Brush

Truly a lifesaver, this brush saves a ton of time detangling your hair. I have one at home and another in my travel bag because it makes brushing your hair post-shower an absolute breeze. Available at www.thewetbrush.com.

It is sweater weather..even here in Miami and I am excited to start wearing soft and cozy styles! Growing up in the Midwest, I am accustomed to seasons. While I am happy with our sunny skies almost 365 days a year…I do miss the fall season from time to time so, when the weather cools, I like to start layering up. I like to take care of my skin and this pure silk pillowcase is another attempt to do so. These pillowcases are made to minimize sleep creases. Cozy Autumn Supper

The theme of this week is “cozy”…first with loungewear…now with this yummy meal. Sometimes I get in the mood to cook a few nice dishes on these gloomy or rainy fall weekends. If you are feeling the urge, give this dinner menu a try…it features a variety of fall ingredients…you can take the leftovers from this cozy autumn supper for lunch.

Apple Cranberry Walnut Salad

Ingredients

s

Salad

6 cups mixed greens

1 red apple

1 green apple

1 cup walnuts, roughly chopped

⅓ cup crumbled feta cheese

⅓ cup dried cranberries

Dressing

1 cup apple juice

4 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

2 tablespoons honey

Scant ½ teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon black pepper

¼ cup olive oil

Instructions

Core and chop apples into thin slices. Toss lettuce, apples, walnuts, feta, and cranberries together in a large bowl. Whisk together all dressing ingredients. Toss with salad immediately before serving.

Rustic Spinach and Cornmeal Soup

Ingredients

6 cups (or more) low-salt chicken broth or vegetable broth

3/4 cup polenta (coarse cornmeal)

3 tablespoons all purpose flour

3 tablespoons butter

2 garlic cloves, peeled, crushed

coarse kosher salt

8 ounces baby spinach leaves

s

Instructions

Bring 6 cups broth to simmer in large saucepan; cover to keep warm. Whisk polenta and flour in heavy large pot. Add 1 cup hot broth; whisk over medium-high heat until smooth. Stir in butter and garlic; sprinkle lightly with coarse salt. Gradually add 5 cups hot broth by cupfuls. Boil gently over medium heat until polenta is tender and soup is creamy and thickened, whisking frequently and adding more broth to thin, if desired, about 25 minutes. Stir in spinach by handfuls; simmer until wilted, stirring often, 5 to 7 minutes longer. Season with more coarse salt and black pepper. Ladle into bowls.

Risotto with Butternut Squash, Leeks and Basil

Ingredients

3 tablespoons olive oil, divided

4 cups 1/2-inch cubes peeled butternut squash (from 2 1/4 pounds squash)

3 cups 1/2-inch-wide slices leeks (white and pale green parts only)

1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme

2 cups arborio rice

4 14-ounce cans (or more) vegetable broth

1 cup chopped fresh basil

3/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese plus additional (for serving)

Instructions

Heat 2 tablespoons oil in heavy large pot over medium-high heat. Add squash and sauté until beginning to soften and brown around edges, about 5 minutes. Transfer squash to medium bowl.

Reduce heat to medium; add remaining 1 tablespoon oil, leeks, and thyme to same pot and stir until tender but not brown, about 5 minutes. Add rice and stir 1 minute. Add 1 cup broth and simmer until absorbed, stirring frequently, 3 to 4 minutes. Add remaining broth by 1/2 cupfuls, allowing each addition to be absorbed before adding next, stirring often, about 15 minutes. Return squash to pot. Continue to cook until rice is just tender but still very creamy, stirring gently and often, about 10 minutes longer (about 25 minutes total cooking time). Remove from heat. Stir in basil and 3/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Transfer to large bowl and serve with additional Parmesan cheese.

Blurred Lips

There are varying degrees of this trend and I wear the more subtle version. I like it because it gives your makeup a less “done” feel. To create a blurred lip, buff this Anastasia Beverly Hills Pure Hollywood Liquid Lipstick shade into the lips and then apply a gloss in the center of your lips but be sure it does not go to the outer line of the lip…keep the gloss focused in the center of the lip and less as you get near the lip line. The Red Lip

While I do not often wear a red lip, I am always inspired to wear it during fall. Every year, I find myself buying a new red lipstick to try. This year, I purchased this Jouer Long Wear Lip Crème Liquid Lipstick. It stays on a long time and I periodically add lip balm to keep it from drying out. Available at www.nordstrom.com.

Leopard prints are always classic and elegant. My favorite time of year to wear them is in the fall. I often wear leopard as a neutral…as a pump, bag or scarf but, this season, I have found amazing clothing styles and have created these luxe leopard looks.

Our fall photoshoot was shot at MC Kitchen in the Miami Design District. I was inspired to shoot there one evening while dining on their absolutely delicious Wild Salmon Crudo, Bibb Lettuce Salad and Center Cut Swordfish. MC Kitchen is an upscale, yet approachable, neighborhood restaurant in the Design District area of Miami. The ambiance and food make for an enjoyable evening out. They also have a charming cafe next door with delectable coffee, pastries, salads and sandwiches.
