    Elegant Appetizer Recipes

This week we are all about sharing our ideas for events you are hosting…first, we featured three looks to wear and now we are giving three delicious recipes you can serve. These appetizers are excellent options for a cocktail party as they are easy to eat…your guests will not have to struggle to dip, cut or spread with these options. I have served these to family and friends and received rave reviews.

    Crudités with Chive Crème Fraîche

    Ingredients

1/2 lb green beans, stem ends trimmed

    1 bunch baby rainbow carrots

    1 English cucumber

    1 cup crème fraîche

    2 tablespoons heavy cream

    1 lemon

    1 tablespoon minced fresh chives

    1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

Sea salt and freshly ground pepper

    Instructions

Bring a saucepan of salted water to a boil. Fill a large bowl two-thirds full with ice water. Add the green beans to the boiling water and cook until just crisp-tender, about 3 minutes. Drain the beans and then immediately plunge them into the ice water. Let stand for 2 minutes, then drain and pat dry.  Set aside.  Trim the carrot tops to about 3/4 inch. Cut the carrots in half lengthwise. Set aside.  Cut the cucumber crosswise into pieces about 3 inches long. Cut each piece lengthwise into quarters to create spears. Set aside.  In a bowl, combine the crème fraîche and heavy cream and whisk until the mixture is the texture of lightly whipped cream. Finely grate the lemon zest into the bowl, then halve the lemon and squeeze the juice from one half into the bowl (reserve the remaining half for another use). Add the chives to the crème fraîche mixture. Stir in the mustard and season with salt and pepper. To serve, divide the crème fraîche mixture among small glasses or narrow bowls…I used shot glasses. Divide the vegetables evenly among the glasses, standing them up in the crème fraîche Serve immediately.

    Savory Stuffed Mushrooms

    Ingredients

10 ounces Crimini or baby Portobello mushrooms

    1 cup softened goat cheese

    ½ cup softened cream cheese

¼ cup diced roasted red peppers

    1 clove of garlic minced

¼ cup plain Panko crumbs (don’t have Panko, use Italian bread crumbs)

    ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese

1 teaspoon salt for the cheese mixture, ½ teaspoon salt for topping

1 teaspoon freshly cracked pepper for cheese mixture, ½ teaspoon pepper for topping

    2 tablespoons olive oil

    Instructions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Wipe the outside of your mushrooms with a damp cloth to remove any dirt or grit. Pull out the stem of the mushroom and with a melon baller, remove the gills of the mushroom but be careful not to pierce the mushroom flesh. Place the mushrooms on a non-stick baking sheet, open side up. Combine goat cheese, cream cheese, diced roasted red peppers; 1 teaspoon cracked black pepper, 1 teaspoon salt, and minced garlic into a bowl. Scoop mixture with a spoon and place it into each of the mushrooms. Arrange mushrooms in a baking pan. Combine ½ teaspoon salt, ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, 2 tablespoons olive oil, Parmesan cheese and Panko. Sprinkle this mixture on each of the mushrooms. Bake stuffed mushrooms in a 350 degree oven for 10-12 minutes. Once the cheese is bubbly and the crumb mixture has become golden brown, they are ready to serve!

    Smoked Salmon Bites

    Ingredients

    Herbed Cream Cheese

1/2 cup finely chopped red onion

    1/2 cup capers, finely chopped

Once ready, remove from refrigerator and let soften for 5-10 minutes. Spread over French rounds. Layer smoked salmon and then onions, capers, hard-boiled egg. Garnish with dill and you are ready to serve!

    At Home Entertaining Wear

Sometimes I like to have a fancy dinner party…other times, a cozy supper and sometimes just champagne and an amuse bouche (sounds fancier than it is). For any of these occasions, I like to feel comfortable pouring drinks, serving food and either mingling around or cozying up on the sofa. Here are three looks that that are ideal for entertaining at home and feeling comfortable at the same time.

This sexy Alexis jumpsuit is elegant and practical at the same time. Jumpsuits are easier to wear than a cocktail dress when entertaining yet look just as dressy.  I like to wear black when hosting in case there is a spill. Available at www.revolve.com.

    Fabulous DIY Floral Arrangement

sReceive a last minute invite to a holiday party? Forgot to plan a thoughtful hostess gift? Hosting a party and want to create fresh flower arrangements for your decor? Don’t worry…we have you covered.

Style & Life Blog: Fabulous DIY Floral Arrangement

When I attend a holiday gathering, I like to take something that I believe the host will enjoy…champagne, flowers or if I know them well, I may bring something more specific…cooking utensils, bath products or pet accessories.  If I do not know of anything specific, flowers are something I like to bring because they feel indulgent…most people do not buy them for themselves and they add beauty to any environment.

Style & Life Blog: Fabulous DIY Floral Arrangement

If I am entertaining, I often keep it simple…real linens, candles and fresh flowers. Every time, I receive a compliments on the decor so if you want an easy option for your holiday party, this is the perfect option. Add some votive candles and you have a chic table.

I found these fresh flowers at a local grocery store. I keep a few of these glass vases on hand. They are versatile and reasonable. Tarrangement includes 1 dozen of red roses, 1 dozen of white roses and one bunch of green hydrangeas. The flowers for this arrangement cost $45. If you have ordered flowers before, you will know that for this amount of flowers, $45 is an excellent price. Have two occasions? You could also break up the flowers and create two smaller arrangements.

Style & Life Blog: How to Create a Sparkly Eye

    s

Headed out for the holidays?  Feel like adding some sparkle to your makeup routine? You are in luck…we are going to tell you how to create a festive and elegant sparkly eye today.

For evenings out, I like to wear shimmery eyeshadows but since we are in the full swing of the holidays, I like to incorporate a bit of glitter for added panache.

This look was created by my incredibly talented makeup artist, Aradia Vive, (see our 5 tips post for more of her makeup tips).  She is incredibly professional and works with fashion shows, models and brides so I knew she would be able to create something truly special. Her secret to keep glitter from being garish is to start with a deep smoky eye and then layer the glitter on at the end. Keep reading for Aradia’s technique for how to create this smoky glitter eye.

    s

“This sexy look never goes out of style. Sultry smoky eye makeup can be a girl’s sexy best friend or worst nightmare. (Hel-lo smudges and raccoon eyes!) When it comes to black shadow, less is more! Rim your top and bottom lash lines with the darkest shade and create a sideways V shape at the outer corners of your lid. Apply the same shade you just used along your bottom lash line with a small angled brush, using short feathering strokes. Wrap around the entire eye. Don’t forget to add a little highlighter. Shimmery white shadow is great for adding a little sparkle to your inner corners, but working it up to your brows is glitter overkill. Dust a gold or copper colored shadow on your lids and smudge it along the lower lash line. Add a hint of bronzer and a nude gloss look for a neutral, everyday smoky eye look that’s anything but boring!”

She used these Stila Glitter & Glow Liquid Eyeshadows on the top of this smoky eye. This is an excellent product…the glitter is fine, it is easy to apply and it stays on well. Use sparingly…when it comes to glitter, a little goes a long way. Available at www.sephora.com.

An afternoon with a friend sipping wine makes for an incredibly enjoyable day. Good conversation, a nice bottle, the sunshine and sea? Hard to beat. Since I live in Miami and the weather is warm most of the year, I tend to drink lighter drinks-wines, champagnes and an all time favorite is rosé. Rosé is a crowd pleaser. It can be served with brunch, lunch, mid-afternoon, with a snack or alone. It is not overly sweet but light, crisp and refreshing.

    s

    ss

So when I was approached about trying Rêve De La Mer rose wine I was excited.  A new rose? Excellent! Rêve De La Mer means “Dream of the Sea” in French. This delicious wine contains notes of strawberry, raspberry, apple, grapefruit, a touch of rose petal and orange blossom and then finishes with apricot and white peach.  It is produced on the island of Corsica, which has a history of making wine for the past 2600 years.

    s

This wine tastes as good as it looks with its pretty peach hue.  I served it on this Christophle tray with gold rimmed stemless glasses and these gold polka dotted cocktail napkins.  Add flowers and you have a stylish presentation, perfect for an afternoon catching up with a friend.

How to Style: Leather and Lace

    s

Awhile back, I had a conversation with a friend discussing how I would like to get a pair of leather leggings.  Living in Florida, it is tough to really justify purchasing a pair since I would wear them fairly infrequently. However, I love how leather looks paired with lace, cozy sweaters and other soft pieces. She said she did not feel comfortable wearing leather because she believed it would look too edgy or super trendy and I convinced her that you can create non-intimidating fashion forward looks with all kind of leather pieces. The conversation inspired me to create these three leather and lace looks that are feminine and flattering for almost everyone.

    The Leather Skirt

This black leather skirt is a classic and will last for many years. Pencil skirts are notoriously flattering and this one is no exception. This beautiful white lace top with dramatic sleeves makes this a look that will turn heads. The skirt is available at www.neimanmarcus.com and the top is available at www.nordstrom.com.

    The Leather Top

Black leather is notoriously edgy but the lace detail and flattering silhouette make this leather and lace peplum top from BCBG a chic dream.  Pair with denim or black pants and a pointy toe pump and you are ready for happy hour with friends.  Available at www.saks.com

    An Elegant Amuse-Bouche

Almost everything sounds better in French…the language has that certain  je ne sais quoi. While an appetizer sounds fairly straightforward, an amuse-bouche sounds positively delightful.

According to Urban Dictionary, an amuse-bouche is “a small appetizer meant to tease the palate before the meal.”  It is a single, bite sized hors d’oeurve that is served as a compliment from the chef.  I enjoy serving delicious bites like this and will be serving this Pear with Prosciutto and Blue Cheese  amuse-bouche next week for Thanksgiving. The combination of flavors is positively divine and this recipe takes 10 minutes to prepare. I have served this a number of occasions and it always receives rave reviews.

    s

Pear with Blue Cheese and Prosciutto

    Ingredients

2 pears, sliced, I always opt for Bosc pears

    2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

    1 cup arugula

3 ounces blue cheese, cut into small pieces

    6 slices thinly sliced prosciutto

    s

    Instructions

In a large bowl, toss the pears and lemon juice. Layer a slice of pear, a few arugula leaves and a piece of cheese on a piece of prosciutto and roll up.
