In the Mood for Fall with New Candles

Fall is my favorite season…there is something about the crisp air, falling leaves and layered dressing that inspires me more than any other season. I usually spend quite a bit of time in New York during the fall season, but since I am not traveling as much, I am looking for ways to get in the spirit with the warm Miami weather. Fortunately, I have been able to get in the mood for Fall with these new candles.

Starting on the left…this Magnolia Home candle creates a soothing ambiance with notes of lavender, clover, bergamot and spruce. The Maison Margiela candle makes me feel I am curled up inside by the fire…it has a sweet yet smoky scent with notes of pink pepper, orange flower petals, clove oil and chestnut accord. The Voluspa Baltic Amber candle looks as good as it smells…the amber colored glass has a pretty warm glow when the candle is lit. It smells of the romantic notes amber resin, sandalwood and vanilla orchid. Nest always has lovely fragrances and this Cashmere Suede candle will not disappoint. It has a sexy, masculine scent of tobacco leaves, black amber and soft suede. This West Elm gold and white candle is more of a decorative piece but it actually has a beautiful scent of spices and amber.

Army green is one of those perfect colors that transitions beautifully between summer and fall. The luxe hue looks gorgeous with your summer tan and pairs well with soft shades like white and pink and also looks lovely in fall with shades of brown and black. While this color is often found in edgier silhouettes, I have found some feminine pieces in this chic color that offer fresh style.

Color Crush: Mustard Yellow

Summer is coming to a close and I am trying to soak up the sweetness of these remaining days. There is always something special about summer…the long days, vacations, out of town friends and family…things just feel more relaxed. While the weather in Miami is warm year round, there is still a seasonality…things that indicate seasons are changing and as I think about what to wear now through early Fall, this mustard yellow color is one of my favorite trends. I am seeing it in clothing, accessories, jewelry. These styles below should give you some inspiration on how to wear this fresh color.

Summer Veggie Flatbread Recipe

Summer Veggie Flatbread Recipe

I am always trying to come up with fresh ideas for weekend lunches. Sandwiches can get boring and I want something quick. I created this recipe one afternoon and my family was delighted. You can use a mix of whatever veggies and cheese you like. I purchased these flatbreads at Fresh Market but there are a variety of fresh or frozen options available.

Ingredients

Your Choice of Flatbread

Olive Oil

1 clove garlic, minced

Portobello Mushroom Slices

Zucchini Slices

Yellow Pepper Slices

Red Pepper Slices

Red Onion Slices

Tomato Slices

Shredded Parmesan

Pinch of Dried Basil

Pinch of Parsley

Sea Salt and Freshly Cracked Pepper to taste

Directions

Lightly brush flatbreads with olive oil. Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a pan. Add garlic and sauté for 2-3 minutes, until slightly brown. Add onion, peppers, zucchini, tomatoes and mushrooms. Sprinkle dried basil and parsley into the mixture and cook until veggies are ready. Remove pan from heat. Arrange veggies on flatbread. Sprinkle with cheese, salt and pepper. Place flatbreads on baking sheet. Bake flatbread according to directions. Usually between 15-20 minutes.

I like to pair this veggie flatbread with my favorite arugula salad recipe ( I prepare while flatbreads are baking) and either lavender lemonade or frosé. Voila…a lovely summer lunch!

Lavender Lemonade Recipe

When it comes to serveware, I typically like things that are clean white and clear glass. If I am adding color, I will do it with table linens, flowers or the food or drink itself. However, when I saw this pretty floral set, I could not resist. Over the past few years, my entertaining has transitioned from elaborate dinners to lighter fare…often just apps or desserts and this set is perfect for an afternoon with friends. I created this lavender lemonade recipe to serve but you could also use a sangria or punch.

Lavender Lemonade

Ingredients

Serves 10

(you will need another pitcher as the above carafe only holds 3-4 servings)

2 cups sugar

7 lavender sprigs, including stems

2 cups fresh lemon juice (use approximately 10 lemons)

1/2 cup fresh lime juice (use approximately 4 limes)

Instructions

In a large saucepan, bring water and sugar to a boil. Remove from heat and add lavender sprigs, lemon and lime juices. Let mixture chill, then strain. Once lemonade is chilled, serve in this pretty set.

Just add a plate of macarons and you are ready for a cozy chat with friends!

Crispy Chickpea Trail Mix

Each Sunday, I set aside time for meal prep. I like to hard boil eggs, cut veggies and wash my fruits. Once the week begins, time flies so having healthy options available makes it easy to make good food choices. I make this crispy chickpea trail mix occasionally as an afternoon snack. Since chickpeas are an excellent plant based protein source, it satisfies more than a piece of fruit or crackers. Plus, it is packed with texture and flavor which makes you almost forget it it healthy. Try preparing a batch of this so you can enjoy it throughout the week.

Ingredients:

1 15-ounce can chickpeas, rinsed

3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided

1 teaspoon kosher salt, divided

3 2×1-inch pieces orange zest, sliced into ½”-thick strips

⅓ cup pumpkin seeds (pepitas)

¼ cup rosemary leaves

1 tablespoon pure maple syrup

¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper

½ cup unsweetened toasted coconut flakes

Instructions

Preheat oven to 400°. Place chickpeas on a paper towel–lined rimmed baking sheet and let drain (dryness now equals crispiness later). Remove paper towels and toss chickpeas on baking sheet with 1 tablespoon of oil; season with ½ teaspoon of salt. Roast chickpeas, tossing halfway through, until crisp and golden brown, 35–40 minutes.

Meanwhile, toss orange zest, pumpkin seeds, rosemary, maple syrup, cayenne, remaining 2 tablespoons of oil, and remaining ½ teaspoon of salt in a small bowl. Remove chickpeas from oven and add pumpkin seed mixture; toss to coat. Roast until orange zest is shriveled and pumpkin seeds are pale green, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and toss in coconut flakes; let cool.Trail mix can be made 5 days ahead. Store airtight at room temperature.
