Perfect Skin, My Go-To Guide for Skin Care

This post is sponsored by all of the opinions expressed are my own.

There are a variety of reasons I approached Soveral about becoming a brand ambassador. To start, I have been using their products for years and have had fantastic results. The other reason is because I support the entire company philosophy. I try to live by a wholesome, healthy philosophy, especially when it comes to health and skin, and admire their holistic approach.

I believe that health and good skin start from within. I remember going to the dermatologist as a teen… he told me that diet and environment had nothing to do with the way my skin looked. I was immediately suspicious – even at a young age it did not seem reasonable. Fortunately, it seems the more science progresses, we learn that what we ingest and our environment has a significant effect on our health.

Alexandra Soveral is highly educated. She has her Bachelor Honours Degree in Philosophy of Science with an extra module in Biochemistry, BTEC Anatomy & Physiology, ITEC (International professional practitioner) in Holistic Therapies and ITEC & BTEC Advanced Chemistry of Essential Oils. What impresses me as much as her credentials are the fact that she works directly with clients. I like knowing that the person who is creating the products actually helps real clients, hearing about their skin problems and understanding what is effective in treating them. I want to learn as much as possible about taking care of my skin. So, naturally, when it was announced that she was writing a book, I reserved a copy so I would receive it as soon as it was released.

Style & Life Blog: Perfect Skin, My Go-To Guide for Skin Care

Perfect Skin is an incredible resource for anyone who has skin problems or wants to learn more about the skin. It covers everything about your skin from your genes, the mind-skin connection, hormones, sun, acne eczema, acne, rosacea, psoriasis and cosmetic treatments and procedures. In Chapter 4, She even has a contributor, nutritionist Deborah Ives, weigh in on gut health and the importance of the digestive system.

The book also provides a few recipes that support overall health and wellness. This is an excellent soup to prepare after the holidays or whenever you need a little detox:

    Recipe

    Savoy Cabbage Soup

1.7 litres of water (1.8 quarts)
    pinch of salt
pinch of cayenne pepper (add a tiny pinch and add more if you want since it is very potent)
    2 garlic cloves
    1 white onion
1 small chunk of ginger, peeled and sliced into thin strips
    2 large carrots
1 medium Savoy cabbage, hard stalks removed and leaves cut into fine strips

Once you read Perfect Skin, you learn so much about how to care for your skin and your health. Perfect Skin is available at alexandrasoveral.com or amazon.com.

    9 Important Skincare Questions Answered

this post is sponsored but all of the opinions expressed are my own

Friends, I am excited to bring you today’s post. I have gotten the inside scoop from Alexandra Soveral, founder of Soveral skincare about the questions you sent in from Instagram stories. I learned so much reading her answers and I know you will enjoy learning more as well.

    s

If you are new to Style & Life…a quick recap. Soveral skincare was founded by Alexandra Soveral. Alexandra received her Bachelor Honours Degree in Philosophy of Science and studied how the use of genetic engineering of flora will affect the world in future generations.  Alexandra became aware of how irresponsible science is being used within the skincare industry. She decided to marry her interest in science with that of natural skincare and set up her own research lab into natural raw ingredients and their benefit on human health. After four years of research, Soveral was founded in 2005.  This independent research has evolved since then and has become a fundamental part of what makes Soveral. As well as being a cosmetic product formulator Alexandra Soveral is also an Aromatherapist and Facialist, therefore focus was given to treatments as much as the product range and they too have evolved along the years.

I hope you enjoy reading this post…my mission at Style & Life is to bring you the products I use, love and know will work for you. Keep reading for some incredible advice.

    s

    1. There is mixed advice about using an exfoliating cleanser…what do you recommend? Is there a benefit to having a texture in your cleanser or does it damage the skin?

Over cleansing is possibly the worst thing we can do for the skin. The idea that our skin needs to be exfoliated and be cleansed with solvents and other harsh chemicals (even natural ones) is a made-up solution to a non-existing problem. In fact, not cleansing the skin at all is better than over cleansing it. The health of our skin is derivative to the condition of its acid mantle that should be a healthy PH of around 4.5, which is a bit acidic and the right environment for good bacteria to thrive. A higher PH will create an environment for bad bacteria and other pathogens such as viruses to start colonies.

Another reason to not over cleanse and exfoliate is that we have just the right amount of skin layers that we need… we are perfectly designed, let’s not interfere with it. Each and every one layer we produce as its own function, even the almost dead skin cells.

If our skin has become overly dry and flaky, then doing a gentle salt exfoliation is good, simply massage fine sea or mineral salt onto wet skin and rinse off. A daily dry face brushing routine should ensure that any dead cells that are ready to be shed off are encouraged to do so, leaving the skin clear to breathe. The Soveral Natural Face Brushes are designed to do so and come with full instructions.

    s

    2. Is having sunscreen in your moisturizer/primer/foundation enough or do you need to a separate sunscreen daily? If so, what brands of sunscreen do you recommend since most have so many chemicals?

Sunscreen should always be applied for when we unavoidably must be in sun, such as when on a boat, out shopping or sightseeing all day. When getting out and about your day choose to be in shade rather than being in the sun wearing sunscreen. The toxins they have and the way they block the skin is not healthy in so many ways.

We must also try to get a bit of sun every day without sunscreen, Vitamin D deficiency is on the rise, even in regions of the world where there’s a lot of sun. Vitamin D deficiency impairs the immune system… cancer is a deficiency of the immune system! In my book Perfect Skin, I give very clear guidelines on how to benefit from the sun in a safe way.

My favourite sunscreen is from Green People.

    s

s3. How much water should we drink every day for healthy skin?

In general, between one litre and two litres, very much depending on the size and structure of the individual. Everyone is different so no one guideline fits us all. It has to do with size and metabolism. Some people drink a huge amount of water and still have dehydrated skin. One must ensure that our gut is healthy to make good use of the water we drink.

Some people think that their skin is dehydrated when in fact it is dry. When the skin has a film of dry skin and its flaky, it means that its dry and dry skin needs oil whilst dehydrated skin needs moisture.

    ss

    4. What is the story with retinol…is it as effective as people say it is?

Retinol is very effective at accelerating the rate at which skin cells divide. New cells get pushed to the surface quicker because new cells are being born from underneath at a much faster rate. What usually takes 28 days will take 20 or 15 days, depending on the strength of the Retinol. This is what causes the peeling that sometimes occurs when using any Vitamin A product. The cells that are then on the surface are younger and the skin looks… of course, younger. However, those young skin cells are not fully formed and not able to cope with environmental stresses such as UV light, pollution, bad bacteria, etc. In my view, the interference of the rate at which cells divide is never a good thing for our general health and considering that Vitamin A (what Retinol derives from) is absorbed into the body through the skin tell me that there may be potentially dangerous health risks with prolonged use of high dosage topical Retinol products. Lastly, the overuse of Retinol may also exhaust the skin to the point of causing premature aging… this I have seen happening in many of the skin consultations I do, clients come to see me that is no longer responsive to Retinol and are left with aged, dull and tired looking skin.

    s

s5. How often should we get facials? Do you believe extractions are beneficial? I hear mixed thoughts.

Good face massage is wonderful and if we can get it once a month then that is the ideal. However, facials that consist of extractions, peels or anything else abrasive are best avoided altogether. Extractions were invented by skincare brands wanting to sell you products and treatments. When a pore is extracted, all the sebum is removed from it, this sends a message to the sebaceous gland to produce more sebum, in a few days the pore is filled again. Meanwhile, the wall of the pore is exposed to oxygen and this makes the cells inside the pore harden in order to protect the body from anything entering, such as viruses and bacteria. With constant extractions, the inside walls of the pores will become like the skin outside, causing permanently enlarged pores. The whole idea of extractions does not make any sense. The best thing is to remove just the first layer of sebum by using the Angel Balm, the fats in it will blend with the sebum which is then removed with the hot face cloth. This way every day we are just removing a layer, encouraging the pore to slowly shrink. This may take a few weeks so we must be patient and remember that for those already enlarged pores there’s not much we can do but to just keep them clean daily.

    s

    6. What is the best body moisturizer?

I prefer a body oil because it’s much more effective. Make sure to use a plant oil and not a petrochemical. Massage onto wet skin straight after the shower and towel dry as normal. It’s a game changer!

    s

s7. Is it beneficial to have a separate Vitamin C product in your skincare routine?

Vitamin C in a high dose becomes an acid solvent for the skin, so no, I really don’t think it beneficial. Vitamin C is a good antioxidant for the surface of the skin but only in small doses, which are present in most natural products. Collagen is made in the Dermal layer, pro-collagen molecules are formed with the use of protein and Vitamin C, these will only reach the Dermal layer through the delivery of oxygenated blood to the skin. Ensuring a diet rich in lean protein and plenty of Vitamin C is essential. This coupled with good daily massage to bring the blood flow to the skin is what will encourage the production of collagen and elastin fibres. Remember to always massage the skin with a good face oil, never when its dry in order to not stretch it.

    s

    8.  What is your opinion about microneedling?

Anything that causes inflammation is not contributing to our health in the long term. Also, I have had many clients who have had all kinds of infections and adverse reactions.

    s

s9. What are your top 3 recommendations for healthy skin?

Eat a healthy and varied diet, as plant-based as possible and with plenty of good fats.

Make good sleep a priority in your life.

Massage the skin daily with a good vegetable face oil and keep it moisturised at all times.

The Foundation of my Soveral Skincare routine

Earlier this month, I announced that I am a Soveral skincare brand ambassador. This relationship is incredibly important to me because I want to share elegant products that are made with the highest quality, that I believe will truly benefit you. And Soveral skincare is exactly that.

I have spent over 20 years in the fashion industry and my favorite roles have been creating clothing and accessory collections. While fashion insiders appreciate designer labels, what we truly covet are those ultra-chic brands are that are understated and incredibly well designed…the brands that the fashion editors wear and write about without being paid for it.

That is precisely what Soveral skincare is in the beauty industry. It’s that chic, elegant line that is packed with quality. Vitamins. Anti-oxidants. Hand blended. It honestly does not get more luxurious than this. I understand how to manufacture goods, so while I will buy a shirt from Zara, I will not buy a face cream from Target because I want the ingredients that I use on my skin to be of the highest quality. My skin is simply too important to me.

Here is the foundation of my skincare routine. I do this every morning and evening and am enormously pleased with the results. It is also a moment for myself…a little bit of self-care in my crazy day and that is the ultimate luxury.

Style & Life Blog: The Foundation of my Soveral Skincare Routine

    Step 1: Awaken Cleanser
Awaken cleanser is a light, milky cleanser that smells like a little bit of heaven. Every evening when I take off my makeup, I take a deep breath and inhale the lavender essential oil. It is made with aloe vera, sunflower seed oil and will give your skin a deep cleanse (also removes eye makeup) without damaging your skin.

Step 2: Floral Rain Face Mist
After cleansing my skin, I will then apply the floral rain face mist that is made with orange blossom and red roses. It hydrates prepares the skin for the facial oil and cream. I also use it mid-day for a little refreshment.

Style & LIfe Blog: The Foundation of my Soveral Skincare Routine

Step 3: Forever Young or Midnight Oil Facial Oils
These facial oils are probably my favorite product in the routine. I feel they make a significant difference in my skins appearance. There have been times when I ran out and people have asked if I am tired….and the truth is that I have run out of my facial oils!

I use Forever Young during the day. It contains Omega-3 fatty acids to protect the outer layer of the skin while a synergistic blend of essential oils to stimulate the detoxification and regeneration of the skin.

At night, I use the Midnight Oil, which was voted “One of the Best Radiance Boosters”. It is made with palmarosa and rose geranium, which balances both oily and dry skin. Lemon and fennel help the skin the skin decongest and breathe while stimulating cell renewal to refresh and hydrate. If your skin is sallow and tired, then this product is for you.

Style & Life Blog: The Foundation of my Soveral Skincare Routine

    Step 4: Formula 1 or Formula 2
Because I like my skin to be very hydrated, I then follow up with the Formula 1 (at night) or Formula 2 (during the day) moisturizer.
These creams have a rich luxurious feel but have never clogged my pores.

Formula 1 is made with sunflower seed oil apricot kernel oil and mango butter and a natural regenerative stimulant to keep you glowing all day. They also contain a blend of essential oils that help you fight fatigue and stress.

I use Formula 2 during the day. It is the same blend as Formula 1 and adds SPF 15 to protect from sun damage.

Step 5: Forever Young Eye Cream.

The name pretty much says it all. If you are battling puffiness or dark circles then this eye cream is for you. It contains mandarin peel, frankincense, vitamin E, honey extract and evening primrose to decongest and prevent wrinkles.

Friends, I encourage you to take care of your skin, you only get one set of it. If you have any questions, please reach out; I am happy to answer any questions you may have. To shop these styles, see below or go to www.alexandrasoveral.co.uk.com for the full collection.

Who is Alexandra Soveral and why am I obsessed with her products?

this post is sponsored by Soveral but the opinions expressed are my own

Friends… I am excited to announce another “first” for Style & Life! I am going to be a brand ambassador for the award-winning skincare brand, Alexandra Soveral. If you have been following me for any length of time, you will know this is a dream come true. I started posting about Soveral skincare back in 2014. It is such an honor to work with a brand I have been using for many years.

Skincare is, hands down, the #1 thing in which I invest. This has been my perspective since my early 20’s. You can always buy a nicer shirt or pair of shoes, but you only get one set of skin. If I need to cut back on my budget, I will do it in other places, but never my skincare. I have tried a lot of different products over the years. A LOT. I discovered Soveral one evening while scrolling through Pinterest one evening and it immediately peaked my interest. Particularly, the fact that it is 100% organic and hand blended.

I placed an order, which I will never forget. Someone emailed me the next morning and advised my items would ship in 2 days since they were making “a fresh batch”. I was beyond impressed. A fresh batch? It hasn’t been sitting on a shelf for 2 years? I gladly waited and when I received the items, was delighted with the clean, elegant packaging which just so happens to be and how it is recyclable and created using non-toxic inks.

About a week after using the products I had multiple friends and colleagues ask “What did you do to your skin? It looks amazing…you are glowing.”  I was traveling frequently and my skin was sallow and tired. After using Soveral products, it was brighter, smoother and had an overall better texture. Since then, several of my friends have tried it and are also hooked.

    \

The company was founded by Alexandra Soveral and Jorj Aleem.  Alexandra is the perfumier and cosmetic formulator, while Jorj concepts and defines how the product is presented. Alexandra was studying for her Bachelor Honours Degree in the Philosophy of Science (how the use of genetic engineering of flora will affect the world in future generations). She became aware of how irresponsible science is being used within the skincare industry and decided to marry her interest of science with natural skincare. She set up her own research lab into natural raw ingredients and their benefit on the human health. Impressed? Me too. Additionally, they have received a number of prestigious awards (to learn more click here).

Many of her products are available at net-a-porter.com or you may order directly from their website alexandrasoveral.com. I am excited to share more about this incredible brand in upcoming posts.

Fall Evening Makeup Tutorial with Charlotte Tilbury

this post is sponsored by Charlotte Tilbury but all of the opinions expressed are my own

There have been a lot of “firsts” for Style & Life this year…first event, first personal appearance and now my first makeup tutorial. I created a video for this Fall evening look using Charlotte Tilbury makeup.

I realize that makeup can be intimidating for some so I hope you find this helpful…over the years, I have learned so much from my makeup artist, Aradia, and wanted to share with you.

In this video, I use The Dolce Vita eyeshadow palette which is perfect for Fall. The rich colors look sophisticated after all a summer of light pinks and neutrals. After contouring, highlighting and adding blush,  I finish the look with Charlotte’s legendary Pillow Talk lip liner and lipstick.

Good luck creating this gorgeous look!

    6 Tips for Brighter Eyes

Up late on a Netflix binge? Tossing and turning thinking about your to-do’s? Baby not sleep trained yet? Fear not, friends, we have solutions to help those tired eyes of yours look a little brighter. I have a two year old, full time job and a side hustle so I am regularly in need of some help and use these options often.

    Jade Roller

I posted awhile back about my jade roller and it is really helpful for de-puffing the eye area. You simply use the smaller end and spend some time rolling it around the eyes…it reduces puffiness and helps your skin care products absorb better. Be sure to keep it in the refrigerator for a deeper cooling sensation. Available at www.sephora.com.

    Eyelid Primer

This eyelid primer is water resistant and is effective in making your eye makeup last all day. There are several different shades available, and I like the blue tinted shade best because it makes the white of your eyes look brighter. Available at www.sephora.com.

    Concealer

Style & Life Blog: 6 Tips to Brighter Eyes

In order to cover dark circles and make your eyes pop, apply your concealer in a triangle shape below the eye and blend outward prior to applying your foundation. I like to use a foundation brush as it is more precise than a sponge. Concealer available at www.sephora.com, brush options linked below.

    White Eyeliner

Applying white eyeliner at your waterline is another trick that will make your eyes pop. This NYX blend is creamy and easy to apply. Keep the line thin and it will be  very subtle.  I like to buy a few of these eyeliners and keep in my suitcase and handbag for easy touchups. Available at www.amazon.com

    Eye Cream

If your eyes are tired, there is nothing more essential than keeping the skin hydrated and healthy. I use Soveral Forever Young Eye Cream...it is “a silky cream full of cell regenerating oils of mandarin peel and frankincense combined with the antioxidant powers of vitamin E, honey extract and evening primrose make this cream a miracle worker on aging or tired eyes. The decongestive properties of mandarin peel also aids in minimizing puffiness and dark circles.” Um…yes, please. I apply and then use the jade roller over it.  Available at www.netaporter.com.

    Gel Patches

When I pull an all nighter, my eyes tend to burn so I will take 10-15 minutes to lay down and apply these gel patches. They contain caffeine and hydrolyzed collagen to give you that well rested glow.  I also keep them in my travel bag as my skin gets dehydrated when traveling. Available at www.neimanmarcus.com.

Keep those eyes looking bright and beautiful with these easy tips!

    DIY Eyelash Treatment

Coconut oil is a favorite product of mine….not only can you cook with it but it can be used for a number of beauty treatments (see skin care post here and hair care post here). Another way I like to use it is to remove eye makeup and as a conditioner for my eyelashes. Between mascara and false eyelashes, they need a little TLC from time to time.  Being a bit of a beauty junkie, I have tried a number of eye makeup removers and, by far, coconut oil is just as effective as anything I have purchased.

Style & Life Blog: DIY Eyelash Treatment

You can use it straight out of the jar, but I wanted to find a way to travel with it and so I found these nice little applicators on Amazon. I use fractionated coconut oil so that it will pour into the applicator (it is also great as a skin moisturizer). To create this hydrating little treatment, simply open the applicator, add 1-2 drops of lemon essential oil, 1-2 drops of lavender essential oil and fill the rest with the fractionated coconut oil. Apply carefully to your eyelashes to remove makeup or before bedtime if you just want a hydrating lash treatment.

Keep those lashes gorgeous with this luxurious little treatment for your lashes.

    The Benefits of Jade Rolling

I started seeing jade rollers a couple of years back and, being a bit of a beauty junkie, was intrigued about this pretty little tool.  After doing some quick research, I decided to order it since they are relatively inexpensive and looked easy to use.

Jade rolling is an ancient Chinese technique that basically gives your face a nice, cooling massage.   I like to use my jade roller first thing in the morning after applying my facial oil and cream because it helps me feel more awake.

Style & Life Blog: The Benefits of Jade Rolling

The benefits of jade rolling are reported to be lymphatic drainage, the lifting of facial muscles, collagen stimulation, improved circulation, reduction of under eye dark circles and increased absorption of skin care products.

It is easy to use. Simply apply your favorite serum, oil or cream. Use the large end of the jade roller in an upward and outward motion.  The small end is perfect to use under the eyes to reduce puffiness. I usually roll each portion of the face 5-7 times and sometimes more because it is so soothing. I always use this before a photoshoot or while traveling. I keep mine in the refrigerator so that it feels extra cold to the skin. Take a moment and treat yourself to a little luxury with this cooling facial massage! No appointment required.
