    Alexandra Soveral’s Facial Massage Video

Am a bit obsessed with skin care and am always looking for ways to better take care of it…I am an avid user of Alexandra Soveral’s organic skin care line (see post https://styleandlife.com/soveral-organic-skin-careluxury-face/).  I follow the brand on Facebook and enjoyed this video they posted. The video was originally created for beauty blog, Into the Gloss, and shows Alexandra’s technique on how to give yourself a facial massage. This massage improves circulation, detoxifies glands and keeps skin hydrated.  I have created a ten minute ritual at the end of each day where I take off my makeup, wash my face and give myself this massage. It feels good to invest in a moment of wellness at the end of each day.

Take a moment for yourself and your skin and enjoy the video.

  • A Reflection on the Meaning of Kindness

A Reflection on the Meaning of Kindness

A Reflection on the Meaning of Kindness

Most I know are familiar with the work of Crisis Aid International (see Africa Trip Anniversary post). Many are less familiar with the work of my mother, who runs Love and Care Youth Center in Saint Louis. Love and Care Youth Center was founded in 1983, by a French woman, Mina Paille. Mina immigrated to Saint Louis and started Love and Care Youth Center to feed and assist low income families. My mother volunteered with Mina for eighteen years and when Mina passed several years back, she asked my mother to continue her work under the umbrella of Crisis Aid International.

“The Center” as we affectionately call Love and Care, hosts a church service and food distribution every Friday afternoon. They run an after school tutoring program on Thursday evenings for children in the neighborhood. For Thanksgiving and Christmas, they feed over 200 families and provide gifts for the children. Most of the people “The Center” serves come from broken familes and have experienced abuse, struggle with addiction or have physical and mental handicaps.

My mother is my best friend and we speak every day. Rare, if ever, is the day she has been shopping and lunching with friends. Usually, it’s her account of taking a homeless friend to help file social security, going with a woman who needs teeth to the dentist or meeting with a young woman who needs marital advice. She is intimately involved with the details of the people’s lives she helps.

Fortunate to have an example like this, I am reminded to slow down and consider ways that I can extend kindness and care to others.

  • A Travel Palette from Urban Decay

    All In One

Being a frequent traveler, I am always looking for items that will streamline my suitcase. I am a fan of Urban Decay’s Naked eyeshadow palettes and decided to try their new Naked on the Run palette for a recent trip. Finally! A makeup palette that contains everything you need…I packed this, foundation and brushes and was able to create multiple day and evening looks from this palette. The packaging is beautiful and the palette contains blush, bronzer, highlighter, lipgloss, eyeliner, mascara and five eyeshadows in shades of taupe. The combination of colors allows you to create a range of looks, from soft and pretty to deep and dramatic. Any friend would be delighted to receive this as a gift or would make a nice stocking stuffer for yourself.

    Stylish Stationery…the return to paper

    stat The Return to Paper

Recently have felt overwhelmed by technology and all of its auto-reminders, beeping and vibrating and, in turn, have returned to using an agenda to manage my calendar and to-do’s. There is something enjoyable about looking at the days ahead and writing down plans over a cup of tea. I feel more present and focused managing my schedule this way.

The return to an agenda inspired me to start sending proper thank you notes rather than a text messsage. While the text message is certainly more timely and efficient, I like sitting down and thinking about the effort someone put into selecting a gift or hosting an occasion and, in turn, expressing my appreciation. In addition, I enjoy buying stationery and it gives me a reason to buy more. Two of my favorite stationery companies are Sugar Paper and Rifle Paper Company. Sugar Paper is a Los Angeles based company who believes that “love is in the details” and offers a beautiful selection of notecards, place cards, and other lovelies. Rifle Paper Company has a fantastic selection of notecards, iPhone cases, calendars and other paper items.

While the holidays can be overwhelming with the shopping, parties and travel, it is a time of year when people are hosting and giving…trying to make others feel special. Perhaps a thoughtul note of appreciation will bring a smile to their day.

    Rebecca

Soveral Skin Care…luxury for the face

    Soveral Skin Care

Feeling my skin care routine was in need of a change, I started researching options and, through a variety of articles, decided to try Soveral Skincare. Alexandra Soveral is a London based aesthetician who has created her own line of products made from essentials oils, natural vitamins and antioxidants. She uses unrefined oils and unbleached waxes and butter in the production of her line

To start, I ordered small sizes of the Forever Young Face Oil and Formula 1 Moisturizer from Net-A-Porter. From the first application, I recognized an immediate difference in the quality of the product. The luxurious and emollient textures leave my skin feeling hydrated and pampered. I then placed an order directly from the alexandrasoveral.com as I wanted products that were not available elsewhere.

Upon placing my order, I was contacted by a cheerful representative who advised they would ship my order the following day as they were “making a new batch of the Awaken cleanser”. More intrigued than ever, I was anxious to try the additional products. Continuing to exceed my expectations, I have immensely enjoyed each of the products-the Awaken cleanser, Angel Balm and Volcano Ash mask. The packaging is clean and elegant, the products smell and feel divine and my skin has never looked or felt better. Another bright spot is that friends have asked unsolicited questions about my skin and the more youthful appearance.

  • Africa Trip Anniversary with Crisis Aid International

Africa Trip Anniversary with Crisis Aid International

    Never The Same

This month marks the two-year anniversary of our trip to Africa. We spent two weeks exploring the work of my parents, Pat and Sue Bradley, founders of Crisis Aid International. Having heard about their work for many years, I believed I knew what to expect during our stay. While I was not surprised at our experiences…the sights, smells and sounds created an entirely different experience than photos ever will.

We met many people on our trip. Amazing volunteers who dedicate their lives to helping people…young orphaned girls who lost their parents to AIDS…families on the brink of death from malnutrition…children who had been healed from disease and disfigurement after being treated at a Crisis Aid medical clinic…women who have rehabilitated their lives after being held in forced prostitution. Each moment left a different emotion…a broken heart for the hungry…anger at the injustice of life…despair by the complexity of the issues these people face…joy for those who have been helped, and, at the end, pride in my parents that made my heart explode.

The trip will stand out as one of the most important experience in our lives. After returning home, I started looking at life differently. Fortunate, blessed, lucky…these words do not come close to describing our lives in the US and civilized nations. It has inspired me to take the opportunities in front of me for the women who do not have them. To try and live with gratitude, because we have so much. To consider the legacy I will leave the world and to send money, as much and as often as I can. because, in truth, that may be what they need the most. While photos will never convey the magnitude of the experience, I hope they give you an idea of how they impacted our lives.

    The Perfect Cheese Board

    perfect cheese board

When hosting friends for afternoon cocktails or a full-fledged dinner, one of the simplest and most well-received hors d’eurveues is a charcuterie and cheese plate. It allows guests to sample a range of flavors and textures. Since little preparation is needed, it is a staple of mine.

To create a compelling presentation, it is important to offer a variety of colors, shapes, flavors and textures. As many have dietary needs, it also gives a greater chance there will be something for everyone. Below is a list of what I like to use when creating a board.

Charcuterie-Offer 2-3 selections. I like prosciutto, pancetta or salami

Cheese-Select a range of textures and flavors. Favorites include robiola, manchego, chevre, gouda, aged parmesan, blue and camembert.

Roasted Peppers-Using both red and yellow gives your plate a pop of color.

Olives-Many grocery stores now offer olive bars, try to include 3-4 varieties.

Nuts-Marcona almonds, walnuts, pistachios and roasted almonds are all crowd-pleasing options.

Bread & Crackers-I use a French baguette, sliced. Rosemary crackers, crostini or water crackers are other options.

Other items I like to include are olive oil, sea salt, cornichons, figs, and sliced pears.

Hope you and your guests enjoy!

    Rebecca

  • In The Grand Manner from ELLE Decor

    ELLE Decor November 14 (reposted)

For a Manhattan client, Ann Pyne, head of one of America’s oldest and most distinguished design firms, gives old-school decorating a surprising new relevance

Text By Penelope Rowlands / Photography By Bjorn Wallander / Produced By Robert Rufino

From the exterior, the townhouse fits right in with the other quietly opulent residences on a leafy street on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Its floor plan is no less classic, consisting of “10 chunky rooms, all in the same proportion,” according to designer Ann Pyne.

Perhaps it was this very sameness that inspired the designer, head of the renowned New York firm McMillen, Inc., to give each room a strong, aesthetically distinct identity all its own. This is a house of dramatic transitions. To move from the living room, with its cloud-hue palette, to the deep-tone library is to feel as if you’ve stepped into The Wizard of Oz at the point in which the movie bursts into brilliant Technicolor from retro black and white. The designer and her clients, a professional couple, are longtime friends. The wife worked closely with Pyne on the project, a process she describes as revelatory: “It was opening up a new world, like reading Emily Dickinson for the first time.”

The wife, in fact, initiated the idea for the monochromatic living room. “My order for it was that it had to be white and floaty,” Pyne recalls. A muted room can be difficult to pull off: Monotony is an ever-present threat. Yet Pyne keeps it handily at bay by layering on textures—“for visual interest,” she says—including an array of luxurious fabrics, from the sofa’s linen damask to the pale, almost chalky gray velvet upholstery on a pair  of fauteuils.  Pyne retained the existing Louis XVI–style paneling and then added period-inspired plaster sconces, so that the living room appears at first glance neoclassical, from the twist of its draperies to the garden statuary set before the French windows. And yet for all its 18th-century underpinnings, it contains modern elements as well, such as a striking cylindrical table of polished steel with a 1920s feel— a piece that is actually contemporary— one of two low tables by artist Silas Seandel in the room.

The design for this area coalesced by accident, after a gilt bronze Louis XV clock, which was to be a focal point, crashed to the ground. While it was being repaired, Pyne hung an artifact from a distinctly different era in its place: a portrait of Andy Warhol— the master of Pop himself— by the photographer Francesco Scavullo. And there, with Warholian impudence, it remains. Its placement was “a tipping point that made the room come alive,” Pyne recalls.

The juxtaposition of drastically different periods “imparts a liveliness,” she adds. It may also be inevitable: McMillen was founded in 1924 as a bastion of tradition; Pyne, by contrast, has “always been on the edge of things,” as she puts it. She grew up with the firm, in a sense— her mother, the acclaimed decorator Betty Sherrill, was its president for three decades, beginning in 1972. While Pyne “always loved rooms and decor,” she says, she pursued other professional interests, writing fiction and teaching among them, before arriving at McMillen’s door; she assumed the top job after her mother’s death last spring. The family is now also represented by a third generation, Ann’s daughter, Elizabeth Pyne, who runs the newly established McMillen Plus, a division geared toward younger clients.

In the case of this townhouse, its rooms are discrete: Almost none affords a view of another. “The challenge was to have continuity throughout,” Pyne says. She worked toward this in myriad ways— for example, by having all the floors stained a deep blue, inspired by a large painting of peacocks by John Wesley in an upstairs stairway. These exotic creatures became a subtle leitmotif through the house.  Rather than toning down the dining room’s gilt-edge pillars, which seemed almost gaudy at first, she decided to “just have fun with it,” she says. The sparkly silver-and-gold geometric wallpaper and patterned chairs match the flash of the architectural elements.

While the jewel-tone library on the floor above is a place of almost hallucinatory color—“a nighttime room,” Pyne says—the room that sits lowest in the house, contiguous to its garden, is a place of pure daylight. The clients “wanted a garden room no one had ever seen before,” the designer says. The springboard for the room was a set of closet doors designed by San Francisco decorator John Dickinson that Pyne found at auction. She lined the walls with these, even creating new ones to match as needed. The effect is of an urban town square, a                                                                                                                                 magic one, where the houses have mirrored windows and, thanks to an artfully stenciled floor, the ground is cobblestone.

What stitches the design of this residence together is a philosophy more than anything else. “I think there should be a sense of slight confrontation when you go into a room,” Pyne explains. Which, come to think of it, animates each and every one of these spaces. Only, it takes a while to see it.

    Fall Favorite: The Red Lip

    redlips-for-webSleek and Sultry

This fall, have been inspired by the cherry and brick red colored lips featured in magazine editorials and Instagram feeds. The bold splash of color is refreshing after a summer of lip balm and neutral glosses. Always a bit uncomfortable wearing bright lipstick, I vowed to find two shades I like. After testing multiple shades, have landed on two combinations that work well.

When looking for a bit of evening glamour, the classic bright red lip is a favorite. Layer MAC’s Redd lip pencil with their Russian Red lipstick and top off with a coat of shiny clear gloss. Maintenance is key with this look so be sure to reapply after dinner or drinks. For day or a casual evening out, Nars Olivia lipstick is perfect. The deep red in a creamy matte finish looks lovely when applied directly to the lip.  I keep the rest of my makeup simple and the lips are the perfect accessory. Try these or test others to find the perfect shade for you.
